She’s a model, a social media star, and she’s appeared in top global fashion magazines. Meet Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld’s famous feline and quite possibly the world’s most pampered pet.

KARL LAGERFELD and Steiff are pleased to announce they will introduce a limited-edition plush toy inspired by Choupette. The cuddly soft toy mimics the appearance of the real-life feline, with silken woven fur and delicate, hand-painted features. She comes with a magnetic black faux leather mouse and gold-plated button in her ear.

Choupette is such a famous and beautiful cat that when this request came to me, I was not even surprised,” says Karl Lagerfeld. “Steiff is the perfect choice for this kind of collaboration. It’s the only company that has the required expertise to highlight the extreme and absolute refinement of this young princess.”

The real Choupette recently took time out from her busy schedule to talk about the collectible toy bearing her name and likeness. “Hi, I’m Choupette, a sacred Birman with immaculate fur.  Without modesty, I am the most famous cat in the world. I must admit I was born under a lucky star – at a very young age, I met the man of my dreams: Karl Lagerfeld! It really was ‘love at first sight!’ Karl is so totally crazy about me he even said that I am ‘the Garbo of cats.’ We never leave each other; he takes me everywhere, pampers me, spoils me, I’m his muse, his inspiration … he confesses that he cannot resist my big opal eyes! It almost makes me blush! Makeup line, magazine covers, interviews, I am very much in demand, but Karl does not want me to do too much. He is very selective and chooses for me la crème de la crème. So when the prestigious Steiff company offered to turn me into the sweetest of plush animals, he readily agreed. And you know what? This plush creation, that’s me! Her silky hair is a call for caresses, to the point that holding her on your lap or next to your heart, you may well start purring too. Immaculate, impeccably brushed, with perfectly manicured claws, she will be almost as sublime as me… Me, jealous? You’re kidding.”

MARGARETE STEIFF GMBH

With a company history of over 135 years, Margarete Steiff is one of the oldest and bestknown brands in Germany. The fascinating history of this world renowned, traditional German firm, known for its famous ‘button in the ear’, began in 1877 when Margarete Steiff founded a felt clothing business. She started making pincushions for friends – the widely known Filzelefäntle or felt elephant. This was so popular amongst children that it became the first plush and child appropriate toy.
With Margarete’s nephews Richard, Paul and Franz Steiff became a family business. Expansion came on in leaps and bounds. In 1902, Richard Steiff designed the 55 PB – the first teddy bear was born. At the Leipzig toy fair in 1903 an American was fascinated by the movable plush bears and ordered 3,000 bears. This was the point of breakthrough for the Margarete Steiff GmbH. After four years, 974,000 teddy bears had been sold.
Since 1904, each animal sports a metal button in its ear to protect the products from counterfeits, distinguish them from the competition and to be used as a Steiff quality guarantee. Today, the firm’s headquarters are still in Giengen in the avant-garde glass buildings from the 1930s. In 2005, a building in the shape of a giant button was added – the Steiff Museum, which houses all the company’s products. Margarete Steiff’s motto ‘Only the best is good enough for children’ still forms the philosophy of the company. Even after more than 135 years, the trademark ‘Steiff button in ear’ still stands for tradition, meticulous safety testing, international appeal, great aesthetics and the highest quality.
